Anson SA4 1984  SA 4 8A-359-372 1800 Bertil Alan Davies NM, USA Added 28-OCT-06 By Chris Robson Allan Davies wrote: I have a pair of them now, both Anson's: the SA 4 that you already have information on and an SA 6 that I purchased earlier this year. The SA 4 is probably a 1984 model. As with the SA 6 there is no chassis plate. The SCCA logbook shows the manufacturer's ID number to be SA 4 8A-359-372. Engine is a Bertil's 1800. Previous owners are Mike McHugh and Ed Ozard, both of northern California. Ex-Bosch pro series car, Mike McHugh from 1989-1998, and had lap records (including the absolute for any SCCA club car at Laguna Seca for years). Currently running in SCCA Formula Atlantic afdavies at ix.netcom.com
Anson SA4 1984 359 Mike McHugh CA, USA On the pole, Long Beach, 1984, by Tommy Byrne in its 1st race. He took off the left/front corner while leading. I have a photo from the 1985 Long Beach Grand Prix, showing him up front, while I'm stuffing a Ralt into the turn two wall, courtesy of a bump from Jeff Andretti. I traded the Ralt to Mark Pivec (then importer of Anson) for the Anson. In my 1st pro race in the Anson, Detroit, 1985, I managed a 10th. I won a lot of SCCA nationals, west coast track records, ran selected pro races, qualified 5th in the 1988 Dallas Grand Prix, and then stuffed into a spinning car in front of me. The car's restored w/ a new tub. ansonracecars at sbcglobal.net

Anson SA6 1985 V601 Allan Davies Added 28-OCT-06 By Chris Robson Allan Davies wrote: The SA 6 is, I believe, a 1985 model. There is no chassis plate'it has been removed. The SCCA logbook issued in 1988 (after it's pro career was over) indicates it is chassis 601. SCCA pro registration tag number is 649. The engine is a Bertil's 1800. Owner trail (from the beginning): originally this car was run as part of a 2-car team (along with chassis 602) in the Bosch pro series by Mark Pivec of Salinas, California, the US importer for Anson cars at the time. The initial SCCA logbook was issued to Mike Sauce In Texas, then the car went back to California to Mark Landon. Rich Soutar in northern California was the next owner, then Garen McCune, from Sacramento, California, whom I bought it from. afdavies at ix.netcom.com

Purportedly, the same folks take / took care of it that do Larry Connor's cars.
Argo JM-2 1978 9 - Gary Dewater WA, USA Added 28-OCT-06 By Chris Robson John Street writes: Argo JM2, #009 was sadly disassemble for its rare parts. Gary Dewater is the owner of the majority of the suspension bits. And I sold the tub and bodywork to a gentleman in England by the name of John Bradshaw. He plans on restoring the car at some point in time. He currently owns and races an Argo JM-3.On Ebay 12/19/04 - project car. This car originally ran in the European Super Vee Championship as the Swiss decals and original logbook in German attest! Competed on some of the premier tracks of Europe. Argo JM-4 1979 Robert McCurdy Updated 26-OCT-06 by Chris Robson from Robert McCurdy: I currently have a 1979 Argo JM-4.  The car has an up rated and much stiffer F-3 tub as well as Lucas Injection.  We are in the later stages of re-assembling it and hope to see tarmac next season. At some point, the tub was up rated and so, as so often happened, the chassis tag was lost.  I bought it out of Canada but it reputedly came from the Colorado area.  It has a bone legal 1600 water-cooled motor with Lucas Injection.  Domenick Billera worked on the car before he passed away and said with the up rated tub and (factory) redesigned engine bay, it was the stiffest Argo he'd ever seen. remccurdy at hotmail.com

Autoresearch - 5 of 7 - Earl Zwickey 7902 Simpson Dr. Amarillo, TX 79121 These cars represent quite an advanced design for 1978, and truly incorporate much of what was the newest state of the art in Indy cars of the era. The designer was David Bruns who went on to be the designer of the Swift chassis from DB-1 through DB-6. Bruns also raced the Autoresearch Super Vee and can be seen in the pictures on Edmunds site (the bearded driver). The cars were originally built without side pods--some were retrofitted with side pods, but mine retains the original configuration. There were also a couple of variations in engine cover design and two different rear wing heights as can be seen in the photos on Don Edmunds web site. FSV photos@Yahoo. Autoresearch

Edge Too [Killian] 1972 1700cc Type 4 Ed Givler MA, USA Jim Killion designed and built the car in 1972. Peter Dandridge, a former Brit of the Sterling Moss era, fabricated the car at his business, Atomic Welding in Cambridge MA. Ed Priebe also assisted in the fabrication. The car was run in IMSA in 1972 with logbook #72SV34. I acquired the car in 1975, naming it The EDGE-TOO. In 1976, it won the first 4 Nationals. It was leading in the next national when I ran off the road and bent the suspension. In the next Pro FSV race, an A arm nut fell off sending it into a bank. Throughout the next 25 years, it won numerous races and was at or under track records at most tracks. It was NE Div Champ in 1980 and was invited to the runoffs numerous times, competing in 1978. It has most likely won more national points than any other single FSV. [See FSV forum for more] edgetoo at juno.com

Eldon 1974 AM74-3-SV AC Ken Taggart PA, USA 717-285-7348 Added 20-NOV-06 By Chris Robson Ken Taggart writes: The only changes to the status of the Elden is that now it holds records at several hill climbs as well. The logbooks indicate Fred Phillips drove it to the National Championship at the SCCA Runoffs in both '74 and '75 (or may have been a back-up car). The car was rebodied by Falconer (apparently several times) and had wings and slicks by the time I purchased it. It is currently in SCCA Solo configuration but all original parts and components have been retained so restoration could be done. Various people up until '85 raced it. I bought the car in '88. It has since won 11 regional and 3 state Solo II championships. ktaggart at comcast.net

Griffith

Chassis Year Chassis Engine type Owner Location Comments Email address
Griffith 1986 GR-06 - Denny Sideri USA Built by Jim Griffith. The first one was built and raced in the early 1980's in the VW/Bosch Pro FSV series. Later, in 1986 the GR-06 design was made of which I have the original. The car was later re-designed as a proto type to be run in the F3 series that was speculated to replace Pro FSV in 1990 but never materialized. In the late 80's, the design of the chassis was changed again and a few more cars were built. The last car was manufactured in the early 90's of which I also own and compete in the current FA class in SCCA. Although we cannot really compete with the newer more advanced and higher-powered RT 41's and now Swift 008, we do sometimes give them a run for their money. (Ex.) We raced for the first time @ Gingerman National in 2000 and qualified the car on the front row with 1999 National FA Champion Brian French. We also finished 4th over-all and in class at the June ROC National @ Mid-Ohio. Both Griffith's have won many races over the years and are a extreme blast to drive although each is completely different in suspension design and act totally independent of each other on the track.

Car was halved and joined to a Crossle F50F from the cockpit forward in latea 70's/early 80's in an attempt to convert the car to water cooled VW motor. The conversion was never completed and the rear half of the chassis remained as part of the aircooled FC car that was homolageted by the SCCA in 1985. Chuck Tame campaigned the car as an FC car for 6 years, then retired it. Ben Ditson purchased the car in 1996 only to sell it in 1998 to Paul Cherkanski from the DC region, who in turned sold it to Sean Pfeiffer of the Laurel Highlands region in MD. Costs me a couple of years. As I did this for my hobby, I could not work on this car all the time.  In Europe, I was told, this 328 was also run with the 1600 water-cooled rabbit engine and that is what I build for this car.  At the moment some 150 bhp to start with. Updates will follow by the time. I put in a rather mild high lift cam at 278 degrees opening. It's not giving its full HP potential but a very nice torque curve. March 80-V 1980 80V-6 - Randy Taylor CA, USA I bought this car from Wilbor Bunce in 1984. It had never been raced. It was a car bought for the team of Dave Pasche. I have raced it as a FSV, FC, and CSR in the SCCA So Calif. Division. I decided to restore the car about 6 months ago. I am looking forward to getting it back together and racing it again. It has never been crashed and is going together nice than new. I was in no hurry to get it done, but since finding out about this group I am a lot more motivated. Please stay in touch; I will be at Watkins Glen for the reunion. RLTaylorS80 at compuserve.com

Ralt RT5 1980 196 1835cc Michael Edick CA, USA Michael Edick writes: I own a 1980 RT5-196, it was bought and raced by a Walter Lechner in Austria, and looks to have won races in Europe before being shipped here to the states. Walter won the '82 European FSV championship, but I haven't been able to confirm if he did it in this car yet! I am in contact with him, and looking to get photo's of the car "back in the day", fun stuff! Under restoration. One of the Mike Andretti championship-winning Ralts. When I bought the car, the fellow who sold it to me said it was an ex-Adretti car, but had no proof. While dancing around on the internet one day, I came across this fellow Derek Harling who has a book from the Ralt factory of chassis plates, tub numbers, gearbox and fuel cell serial numbers...here's what he had to say about my car: "Your RT5-196 was the 11th one delivered. First was in February 1980. Yours was shipped to (Walter) 'Lechner' in June or July 1980 [date has been altered from 6 to 7 or from 7 to 6]. Lechner also had RT5-190 shipped to him on April 22, 1980. Your Arch Motors # is AM80/29, Gearbox H9-3281, Fuel Cell JM27162-3/79." Per Google, Walter Lechner was an Austrian who raced an RT5 in two German SuperVee races in April/May 1980, then no more until August 1980. So did he crash RT5-190, delivered in April, and then replace it with [your] RT5-196 in July because he raced an RT5 again from August until the end of the year. He raced an RT5 once in 1981 but he did buy two RT3s - presumably to race F3 rather then SuperVee. In 1982 he moved back to SuperVee and won the last European [German] SuperVee championship, in an RT5. Just to complete the story his son, Walter Jr., won the Formula Volkswagen championship in 2001! So how and when did yours come to America' One guess would be that with the demise of SuperVee in Europe and the climbing popularity in the US, some cars were shipped over here. Maybe VW America was somehow involved. Now for the intriguing bit, your fuel cell #37341 built in late 1981 is listed as being in car RT5-342 delivered in August 1982 to 'Robertson/Andretti'. Since Michael won the US SV championship title that year presumably this was a replacement car. There are lots of earlier ones consigned to Robertson but not with Andretti's name attached. So how did your car end up with that car's fuel cell' Many possibilities, it may have been switched well after its/their pro lives. Perhaps the Lechner car was sold to or via Robertson (secondhand). Of course once in a pro team, anything can happen since they are stripped and rebuilt so often. Still some questions to be answered, and I have written to Mr. Lechner to try and get some more info with no luck, especially about the part of my car winding up here in the US, and the tie in to Andretti. It's pretty exciting about the possibility that my car either won the 1982 German FSV championship, or was part of Michael Andretti's fleet of cars that he won the 1982 US FSV series! www.mteengineering.com fun stuff! Under restoration. One of the Mike Andretti championship-winning Ralts. When I bought the car

Zink Z-9 1970 S/N 70063 David Fichter 3804 Washington Oak Brook, IL USA Added 01MAY-07 by Chris Robson David Fichter writes: Zink #70063 is one of the three original Z-9 Formula Super Vee's (FSV) built in 1970 by Ed Zink of Knoxville, TN. after SCCA sanctioned the FSV class in November of 1969. It was originally driven by John Finger of Greenville, S.C. as a factory sponsored car for owner, Jack Lazarus, a VW dealer in Gastonia, N.C. In its first year of competition in the 1971 Formula Super Vee Championship Series Finger piloted this car to fifth overall in the point standings. Later that year Finger competed with the same car in Hockenheim, West Germany. Finger successfully campaigned the same car at Sebring, Watkins Glenn, and Road Atlanta in the 1972 Championship Series; then, due to the conflict of traveling and the pressure of raising a young family decided to give up his driving responsibilities and turned the car over to driver, Bob Lazier. Factory driver Lazier then drove the same Z-9 at Donnybrooke, Lime Rock, Portland, Laguna Seca, and Riverside, finishing fifth overall in the 1972 Championship Series. In 1973 Zink replaced the Z-9 with the Z-11 that later went on to win the 1973 Runoffs at Road Atlanta. This Z-9 also competed at the Chimney Rock Hill Climbs and several SCCA national events. Most recently this car competed in MCSCC in 2006. Previously driven by Jon Finger and may have been a factory sponsored car. Restored to good condition. For Sale 9/2000, 3 hours of school time.
