Ron Tauranac made his first race car in Australia in 1946. Then, together with Austin Lewis, they started working on monopods, their initials form RALT. Tauranac traveled to England and together with Jack Brabham they created the company Motor Racing Developments. The RT3, launched in 1979, was the most popular F3 car of the decade of the '80s. Toyota, Alfa and VW engines were run in the different international and national championships. In the USA they were used in the Formula Super Vee, which was basically a Formula 3 but only with VW engines. Modifications were made in '84 and it was called RT5 for the United States.
